Corus Tournament Wijk aan Zee (Jan 15-30 2005) +2 -6 =5 , 13th place The Corus Chess Tournament took place 14th-30th January 2005. Peter Leko won the A-Group of the Wijk aan Zee tournament by half a point from Viswanathan Anand. Anand who was going for three in a row was edged out by half a point, in retrospect his slow start and loss to Peter Leko cost him the event. Leko won four game including two in the final four rounds to win the event for the first time. In third was former leader Vesselin Topalov whos round 10 loss to Judit Polgar with white was costly. Judit Polgar's return to chess saw her increase her rating and tie for 4th with Alexander Grischuk, Michael Adams and Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik seemed sluggish at the start and finish of the event but only lost a few rating points. He didn't seem at his best but his result was reasonable. Loek van Wely, Ruslan Ponomariov and Lazaro Bruzon all tied on 6.5/13 and all gained rating points. Van Wely was very solid apart from an abbaration against Peter Svidler and Lazaro Bruzon did very well in his first Super-event. Peter Svidler started terribly partially as he had black against most of the best players but a couple of wins at least limited the damage. Nigel Short looked on course to at least hold his rating but a final round loss to Van Wely cost him a small rating loss. Alexander Morozevich had a disaster of a start and he couldn't really recover. His play was never close to his best but he did play better later on but the whole event was terrible for him. Ivan Sokolov was the only player without a win, he weakened considerably towards the end but did manage to stop the rot enough to deny Anand a share of first place in the final round. The B event was a fight between Sergey Karjakin who eventually finished in first and long time leader Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Most people have heard of Karjakin but Mamedyarov also I think is a player to watch out for in the future. Magnus Carlsen's debut in the B event saw him finish on 7/13 a reasonable result, a couple of losses in the final two rounds cost him an even better finish but it wouldn't surprise me if this at least partly was due to being very tired. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

57th Russia Championship, cat. 18 (Nov 15-27, 2004) +2 -2 =6 , 4-7th place The
Russian Championship took place November 14th - 27th 2004 in the hotel
Russia. The prize fund was $125,000 with $50,000 to the winner (paid
in rouble equivalent). The all-play-all event saw Garry Kasparov, Alexander
Morozevich, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Bareev,
Alexey Dreev, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Alexander Motylev, Vladimir Epishin,
Artem Timofeev and Alexey Korotylev compete. After a slow start Garry
Kasparov dominated the event winning 5 and drawing 5 which will increase
his rating. This is his first tournament victory for a couple of years
and it was a fine one leaving him 1.5 point clear of Alexander Grischuk.
This was obviously a major mission for Kasparov who had never won the
Russian title (his own words although he had a couple of shared firsts
in the Soviet Championship and hadn't previously played in a Russian
only event). ------------------------------------------------------------------------
